Laos Expedition - Day 6 Travel

We hit the road again after a treat of watermelon from a nearby grocery, before boarding our van to the breakfast point. We are heading to Sala Hin Boun resort, from where we will access Nam Hin Boun river the next day to go to the Kong Lor caves.

We were a little disappointed to end up at the phở (rice noodle) store near the local bus station again, having visited the place for dinner on our first night in Laos. The delightful thing is to buy skewers of meat from the nearby market stores to up our protein intake. There is barbequed chicken dumstick and wing, pork fillet, a whole stick of chicken hearts, and even roasted frogs...

The limestone cliffs litter the landscape like it does along the river too, and the scenery is just as nice on the road. Here we take a toilet break alongside the road, and give our bum a rest.

We were brought to this viewpoint where we can get a panaromic view of the entire karstic landscape around the region, with layers of ragged peaks receding all the way into the misty background. Our photographic crew is hard at work as usual.

After lunch at Xoksay Guest House, we went to the market to get fresh fruits, and David and Sue went on a rampage through the place buying up the market. Mindy took the chance to take aim with the camera on a poor child sitting at a store. It is interesting that they only sells two types of fish, one called the 'Mekong' fish which is pretty large and can be quite tasty, and the catfish. Fish dishes command a premium price however.

We reached the nice cosy resort of Sala Hin Boun at around 3pm, and with some day light left, we decided to assembly our boats for the paddling tomorrow. The place have a menu in french translation and seems quite suited to catering to tourists' tastes, and being so close to the river, we really have no complaints about it at all. Coffee-water in the morning left much to be desired however.
